Onboarding New Team Members With a Tiny Team

We want onboarding to feel as if 10 people are behind the scenes coordinating a new hire’s first week. In reality it consists of a few email templates, Zapier, Notion, Loom and some upfront thoughtfulness.

After an offer has been accepted their information goes into Airtable. This kicks off an email drip that is automated using Zapier.

Email 1 - Welcome to the team! 😍
The first email includes a huge welcome. We share communication tools we use, who they'll be working with, and what they might find useful to prepare for their upcoming first day.

Email 2 - We’re excited to have you
Two weeks before the start date we again share our excitement in having them on the team. We include a short summary of what to expect during their first week onboarding with us.

Email #3 - First Day! 😍
It’s finally here - the first day. Sent the day before, this email outlines what to expect on your first day of work. We use Notion, Loom and Airtable to guide a new hire through setting up software, payroll setup, etc.

Now it’s time for Onboarding week. Here’s the topics we cover:

  • Day 1: Mission & market: Where we fit, what we're doing and why we're doing it

  • Day 2: Product: What we've built, how it works, who uses it.

  • Day 3: Building a brand: Why and how we'll do this

  • Day 4: How we work: Communicating, working remotely, adjusting to 4 day work weeks

  • Day 5: Your first 90 days: What you'll achieve, learn and run with.

Hopefully this will spark ideas on how to get creative with your own team’s onboarding.
